Description: Ensuring that adolescents can seek health care confidentially is critical for promoting adolescent health. With the rapid increase in telemedicine as well as expanded access to medical records and electronic health information (EHI) by patients and their proxies (via ‘Open Notes’ and as a result of the 21st Century Cures Act rules), additional systems and practice level changes are needed to ensure that young people continue to have access to confidential clinical care. This webinar, sponsored by Health Partners on IPV + Exploitation will bring together experts in the field of adolescent and young adult health to discuss the vital importance of attending to adolescent confidentiality in clinical practice, additional safeguards to consider, and specific practice- and systems-based policies and approaches to support adolescent confidentiality.
Learning Objectives: As a result of this webinar participants will be able to:
- Describe how protecting adolescent confidentiality in the health care setting is critical for promoting adolescent health, especially regarding sensitive topics such as substance use, mental health, sexual health, and relationships.
- Explain the legal framework for confidential adolescent health care in state and federal law.
- Identify three challenges for protecting adolescent confidentiality in clinical practice.
- Adopt systems- and practice-level strategies to mitigate against risk for breaches of confidentiality.
